Berlin : Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak as well as top African leaders have been invited to attend next month's summit of the Group of Eight leading industrial nations in Germany, a government spokesman said Monday.

Mubarak will be joined by the leaders of current African Union chairman Ghana and members of the AU-sponsored New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will be hosting fellow G8 members, Britain, France, Italy, Canada, the United States, Japan and Russia at the June 6-8 summit in the Baltic Sea resort of Heiligendamm.

The leaders of emerging economies – China, India, Brazil, South Africa and Mexico – have also been invited to the discussions on climate change and other issues.

Wilhelm said the African participants would discuss steps to advance efforts to help the continent – another key item on the agenda of the three-day G8 summit.
