Dubai : Five Indian members of the crew of a Norwegian vessel convicted by a UAE court for murdering a fellow Indian sailor last year were deported to India after they served out one year in jail.
The captain of the oil tanker 'Champion Pioneer', Jitendra Malhotra, also convicted in the murder, is serving his two-year jail term in the case, the Khaleej Times reported.
Sudheer Nonia Jagannathan was killed on board the ship following a dispute with Malhotra. He was employed as a fitter on the vessel.
The deportation of the five Indians comes following the final judgment of the Fujairah Court of Appeal.
The Fujairah criminal court in the UAE had last year convicted the ship's captain and the five sailors for murdering Jagannathan. However, the court had ruled in July 2006 that the criminal court in the Emirate had no jurisdiction to conduct trial of the accused, as they were involved in a crime committed on international waters.
