Iran urges US to withdraw troops from Iraq

South Shuneh (Jordan) : Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki has urged the US to withdraw its troops from Iraq.

"Sooner or later the United States has to decide to withdraw its troops from Iraq because that is the cause for the continuation of terrorist activities," Mottaki said.

Mottaki made the remarks during the World Economic Forum on the Middle East Saturday, saying instability and the occupation are the two fundamental problems facing Iraq.

A comprehensive solution should be reached to address the two issues, the Iranian foreign minister added.

Mottaki said that the United States should admit to "the failure of its policies in Iraq".

"If Americans admit the failure and have a serious will to correct the current situation, and help the Iraqi people and government to implement security there, these talks can progress and create hope," the Iranian foreign minister said.

Iran has agreed to hold talks with the US on Iraq later this month.

Mottaki had earlier said in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad that Iranian and US officials would meet in Iraq on May 28 at the request of Iraqi leaders to discuss security in the volatile country.

On the sidelines of the foreign ministers' meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Mottaki told a press conference that Iraq would be the only topic of the Iran-US talks.
