Four times increase in fake encounter cases: Human Rights Commission

Patna: National Human Rights Commission said here today that fake
encounters have increased four times from 2002-03 to 2006-07. Most of
the cases of fake encounters come from Uttar Pradesh. According to
Human Rights Commission 83 incidents of fake encounter came into light in 2002-03 which increased up to 301 in 2006-07.

The Chairman of Human Rights Commission Mr. S. Rajendra Babu stated
that 122 cases of fake encounter took place in 2004-05 which increased
to 157 in 2005-06.

100 cases of fake encounter were registered last year. Mr.S.Rajendra
Babu strongly condemned and said that the Commission will never
tolerate any kind of terrorism. "Our country is a democratic country
and the Government can't exhibit terrorism of any form" he averted.

The Chairman of Human Rights Commission stated that over 74 thousand complains were received against violation of human rights last year.
He said that Uttar Pradesh is at the top of this complaints list with
44,560 complains. Delhi and Bihar hold 2nd and 3rd position in this
list. 1596 custodial deaths were reported for the year 2006-07 in
India.
