Baghdad : Separate bomb attacks in Iraq Thursday targeted a funeral procession in Fallujah and construction labourers in Baghdad killing dozens of people, witnesses and reports said.
Also on Thursday, the US military confirmed that a body found in the river Euphrates the previous day is the remains of one of three US soldiers abducted by militants on May 12 near Mahmudiya, according to Arab media.
State TV al-Iraqiya reported up to 25 people killed in the Fallujah blast, which saw a car bomb detonate close to a funeral procession in the restive western city.
In Baghdad, a bomb went off in the eastern suburb of Sadr City in a square where construction workers looking for employment assemble in the mornings.
Witness accounts said the bomb had claimed many lives, but no further information on the death toll was as yet available. Since the square has been the scene of five such attacks since the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, the police had cordoned off the area.
The US military meanwhile said that its soldiers had killed six suspects in a raid targeting Sunni militants in Iraq Wednesday. At least 23 suspects were arrested.
The leader of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq Abdul Aziz al-Hakim said Thursday that the Shia alliance had discussed important changes in legislation regarding federalism, reconciliation and the division of oil profits.
These changes were under discussion at the international conference on Iraq held in Egypt earlier this month.
