Berlin : German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is to host next month's G8 summit, appealed Thursday to demonstrators coming to the June 6-8 event on the Baltic coast to stay peaceful.
"Those who demonstrate peacefully are more likely to be heard," she told parliament during a wide-ranging speech on the summit and world politics.
She said the summit was an opportunity to discuss the world's problems. The objective was worldwide economic growth while limiting the related risks. These included climate change. Answers could only be found jointly, she said.
Anti-globalization activists are angry that they are being kept kilometres away from the summit venue by a fence and a ban on marching in the area.
While the main protest rally will be held four days before the summit in the nearby city of Rostock, some radicals threaten to invade the event itself.
