New Delhi : Hundreds of Gujjars Thursday staged demonstrations at several places in the capital by burning effigies of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, two days after 14 people of the community were killed in Rajasthan in an ethnic upsurge over their demand for better employment and educational opportunities.

The protesters, including women, blocked roads, causing traffic snarls on city roads in the morning. They also shouted anti-Raje slogans.

According to the police, the protesters blocked vehicular movement in Malviya Nagar and Kondli in south Delhi and Khajoori Khas area in northeast Delhi. Incidents of stone throwing on public vehicles were also reported.

Police dispersed a group of protesters who tried to hold demonstrations outside the private residence Raje in south Delhi. A large number of Gujjars gathered at the historic Jantar Mantar in Connaught Place and shouted slogans against her government.

Similar protests were also reported from Noida and Gurgaon, the satellite towns adjoining the national capital.

"We have deployed more personnel all along the borders after reports of violence on national highways. We are fully prepared to battle any situation," a senior police official said.

On Wednesday, around 200 Gujjars had hit the streets in Khajoori Khas to protest Tuesday's police firing in Rajasthan.

Police opened fire to disperse thousands of Gujjars who had blocked the Jaipur-Agra national highway demanding their inclusion in the Scheduled Tribes list.
