New Delhi : The Delhi High Court Thursday appointed a committee headed by former CBI director U.S. Mishra to select citizens to act as traffic wardens and assist the police in making safer the capital’s roads that have witnessed a large number of fatal accidents.
A division bench headed by Justice Mukul Mudgal said Mishra would scrutinize the applications which had been invited by the Delhi Traffic Police for appointing responsible citizens as traffic wardens in various areas.
There has been a public uproar over rash driving as the death toll in road accidents, involving the private Blueline buses, last week crossed the 100 mark this year so far.
The court expressed its concern over the deaths, saying: “Innocent lives had been lost due to rash and negligent driving by the drivers.”
Advocate Mukta Gupta appearing for the Delhi Police said the police had initiated steps to rein in the Blueline buses.
Advertisements had been issued to invite people to participate in the traffic regulation as voluntary wardens in different areas, said the submission of the police.
Last month, the government told the court that it would place before it by Nov 15 a scheme to take the Blueline buses off the city roads.
