Yangon : Visiting United Nations Special Envoy Ibrahim Gambari met Aung San Suu Kyi, detained leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD), here Thursday, the sixth day of the envoy’s visit to Myanmar, according to diplomatic sources.
Gambari, who is UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s Special Adviser on Myanmar, met the NLD general secretary after travelling back from the new capital of Naypyidaw.
No details about their meeting were immediately available.
In the capital, Gambari met Myanmar’s Prime Minister General Thein Sein, First Secretary of the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) Lieutenant-General Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, senior leaders of the NLD and the National Unity Party and representatives of national races as well as diplomatic corps and UN Country Team.
Gambari and Thein Sein had open and detailed discussions on ways to further improve Myanmar’s cooperation with the UN to address the country’s political, human rights, humanitarian and socio-economic challenges in the wake of the recent crisis, according to the UN Information Centre here.
Gambari suggested specific steps for Myanmar to meet international expectations that include the need for dialogue with the opposition without delay as part of an inclusive national reconciliation process as well as necessary confidence-building measures in the humanitarian and socio-economic areas, the sources said.
