Jaipur : Scented kewra water that used to be served at parties by erstwhile royal families in India would be made available in the market for the common man from March next year.
Ganganagar Sugar Mills (GSM), a Rajasthan government enterprise, is all set to launch packaged kewra water. Kewra is derived from the flowers of pandanus odoratissimus (known as ketaka), a plant that grows in different parts of India .
Besides being special in taste, the water will be packaged in bottles that bear a touch of royalty. GSM will also launch plain packaged water in the market.
Initially, the company will launch kewra water and plain water in 250 ml, 500 ml and one litre packs. Later bigger jars would be introduced in the market for marriages and other parties.
A company source told IANS that the water would be made available at the rates of packaged mineral water. The one-litre bottles could cost anything between Rs.8 and Rs.12.
Kewra water will be GSM’s first product in the non-alcoholic category. So far GSM has been producing royal liquor – concocted from traditional recipes – which has been well accepted.
GSM is installing an exclusive water plant in the Jhotwara area of the city. The plant will have all the machines required for the production of fragrant water and its packaging.
“The plant will be installed by February end and we hope to start production of kewra water as well as normal packaged water by the end of the March next year,” O.P. Yadav, general manager, GSM, told IANS.
The project is expected to cost around Rs.10 million and has already been approved by the board of GSM.
The building of the plant has already been constructed and orders for the exclusively designed bottles have been placed. The water will also be supplied to all government departments by GSM.
