Bangalore : Violence in Nandigram region showed a complete breakdown of the constitutional machinery in West Bengal and hence the state government should be dismissed, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh said here Monday.
“Nandigram incidents symbolise dictatorship and tyranny of the CPI-M (Communist Party of India-Marxist),” Singh told a press conference.
The state government had abdicated its responsibility to protect the constitution and the people of Nandigram, he said.
“CPI-M cadres are killing people and the West Bengal police are standing as an onlooker. More than 20,000 men, women and children are living in the open without any relief and rescue,” Singh said.
He also blamed the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the centre for failing to prevent the violence in Nandigram.
As many as 34 people have been killed, allegedly in attacked by CPI-M cadres, in a political turf war in Nandigram since January. The region witnessed yet another flare-up Saturday.
Singh was in Bangalore on the occasion of the swearing-in of B.S. Yeddyurappa as Karnataka chief minister – the party’s first chief minister in south India.
He said since the coalition government in Karnataka had been formed at the initiative of Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S), it will be stable.
“No need to doubt the stability of the government. It will last full 19 months (the remaining term of the assembly),” he said.
