Helpline for unclaimed bodies in Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal : A helpline service has been launched in Madhya Pradesh here to undertake the last rites of unclaimed bodies with an aim “to give an honourable farewell at least in death”.

The service, called Antim Sanaskar Helpline, will perform last rites of unclaimed bodies and also of those who die in destitution.

“The service will run under the aegis of a newly formed organisation known as Jansanvedna Kalyan Samiti,” says journalist turned social worker R.S. Agarwal.

The activists of the organisation on receiving information of any death – where the body is unclaimed or the person has died in penury – would immediately reach the place and take the body into their custody, Agarwal said.

“They would then take the body to crematorium or graveyard, as the case may be, and arrange kafan (shroud), cloth, wood and other necessary items. After this the last rites would be performed as per the religion of the deceased,” he added.

The Jansanvedna Kalyan Samiti members have appealed to the public to extend their moral and monetary support and help in carrying out this service.
