Builder wants to withdraw complaint against JD-U legislator

Patna : A builder who had filed a complaint against Bihar legislator Anant Singh of the ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U), accusing him of demanding extortion, approached a court Wednesday to withdraw it.

Anil Kumar Sharma, the Patna-based builder, had Tuesday lodged the complaint in the court of the chief judicial magistrate here against Singh under Sections 323, 379, 406, 452 and 504 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Sharma, however, moved the court Wednesday seeking withdrawal of his petition.

Court officials earlier said the case had been transferred to the court of Sub-Divisional Magistrate that fixed Nov 25 as the next date of hearing.

“Anant Singh called me from his mobile phone and threatened me and my wife with dire consequences if we failed to execute the sales deed of some property,” Sharma had said in his complaint.

“Singh forced me to sign blank cheques and later Rs.7.11 lakh was withdrawn from my wife Usha Sharma’s account,” he had alleged.

Singh hit the headlines Nov 1 when he was booked for attacking journalists. A court here last week granted bail to Singh and his associates in that case.

Singh, who is seen as a terror in Bihar and has over two dozen criminal charges against him, was arrested with four of his henchmen for attacking NDTV news channel reporter Prakash Singh and cameraman Habib Ali.

They had approached the legislator for his reaction to reports linking him to the rape and murder of a young woman, Reshma Khatoon.

Singh, a legislator from Mokama, is considered close to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

In 2004, Singh was seen brandishing an AK-47 rifle in public but no action was taken against him. Under the law, only security personnel are allowed to carry the assault rifle.
