Three suspected militants killed in Manila

Manila : Three suspected Islamic militants, believed to be involved in a bomb attack in the House of Representatives complex, were killed Thursday in a clash in the Philippine capital, an army spokesman said.

Major Ernesto Torres said the police and army operatives also captured three suspected Abu Sayyaf rebels during the raid on the group’s safe house in the district of Payatas in Manila.

“There are indications that they have something to do with the blast,” Torres said, referring to the bombing late Tuesday at the Batasan Pambansa (national assembly) lobby that killed four people and wounded 10.

Torres said one policeman was wounded in the raid.

Earlier, the police said that based on their initial investigation, the main target of the attack was Basilan province Congressman Wahab Akbar, who had been accused by some military officials of supporting Abu Sayyaf rebels.

An Abu Sayyaf spokesman in Basilan denied involvement in Tuesday’s bombing.

The Abu Sayyaf has been responsible for some of the worst terrorist attacks in the Philippines. It has also been linked to the Al Qaeda.
