Jesse Jackson telephones Bhutto

Islamabad : US civil rights activist and Democratic Party leader Jesse Jackson on Saturday telephoned Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chair Benazir Bhutto and assured his support for her efforts to restore democracy and hold free and fair elections in Pakistan.

Bhutto praised Jackson’s services for the cause of democracy and human rights throughout the world and thanked him for his support, a statement issued by the PPP media centre on Saturday said.

Jackson also accepted Bhutto’s invitation to visit Pakistan, the statement added.

Jackson is known for his humanitarian efforts in Syria, Cuba, the former Yugoslavia and Liberia. He earned worldwide accolade by supporting the democratic movement in South Africa when Nelson Mandela was fighting apartheid.
