Shimla : Having your name in more than one voters’ list can land you in jail for up to a year along with a fine, the Election Commission warned Saturday, reacting to complaints of dual registration.
Following complaints from Bharmaur, Lahaul and Spiti and Kinnaur where election took place Nov 14 that some voters had their names in more than one assembly segment, state Election Commission official Manisha Nanda appealed to voters to check their names on electoral lists.
Dual registration can result in imprisonment under section 17 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, Nanda said in newspaper advertisements published Saturday.
Only those who have lived at a particular place for at least a year are eligible to be registered in the electoral rolls, Nanda said.
Fresh photo identity cards and voters’ lists are currently being made in the remaining 65 assembly segments of the state that will go to polls in the second round on Dec 19. The results will be declared Dec 28.
