Senior Congress leader quits Maharashtra council

Mumbai : The Congress in Maharashtra got a jolt Saturday when senior leader Col. Sudhir Sawant quit as Member of the Legislative Council, on the eve of the Nagpur session of the state assembly, starting Monday.

Col. Sawant cited the style of functioning of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) leader in-charge of Maharashtra, Margaret Alva, and the uncertainty and rumours about change of leadership of Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh since the past few months as the reasons for his quitting the council seat. He has also accused Alva of humiliating and sidelining loyal Congressmen to the “dustbin” and sacking of many party office-bearers.

A former parliament member and AICC general secretary, Col. Sawant has alleged that the move to remove Deshmukh is being spearheaded by Alva. He has alleged Alva is “clearly working for vested interests”.
