Beirut : Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa affirmed on Tuesday that there were still chances to resolve the Lebanese crisis and issue of the presidential election.
“I believe there are still chances (to resolve the crisis),” Moussa told reporters after a meeting with President Emile Lahoud at the latter’s headquarters in Baabda, southeast of Beirut.
“There is still hope although there are difficulties,” he added.
Moussa arrived in Beirut on Monday, two days ahead of a scheduled session of the parliament to elect a new head of state, on a mission related to Arab and foreign efforts trying to reach a consensus ahead of the crucial session.
After three times of postponement, Lebanese Parliament is due to convene on Wednesday to elect a new president to succeed Lahoudbut anti-Syrian March 14 majority coalition and pro-Syrian opposition are still at odds on a consensus nominee.
Under Lebanon’s sectarian power-sharing pact, the presidency is reserved for a Maronite Christian.
Many fear that failure in reaching a deal on the presidential candidate could result in a power vacuum in the country or a split with two rival governments standing against one another.
