Port of Spain : Despite Pakistan’s political problems, it has offered to train the diplomats of Trinidad and Tobago in an attempt to boost its international relations.
Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Canada, with concurrent accreditation to this oil-rich republic, Musa Javed Chohan made the offer during a visit here Tuesday.
Chohan said his country’s Foreign Service Academy is based in Islamabad and has two divisions – junior and senior.
“We train diplomats from mostly Africa and Asia – over 800 people from 75 countries,” he said.
Chohan also met with members of the business community in order to promote bilateral trade.
“Our economic growth is between seven and eight percent. We need investments and more broad-based trade and commerce exchanges,” he said.
He added that Pakistan needed help from Trinidad and Tobago and other friendly Commonwealth countries “to show the world that the current state of emergency is temporary and President Musharraf is fully committed to democracy.”
“We certainly hope that all Commonwealth countries, with whom we have good relations throughout the history of that organisation, would understand the circumstances which led to the declaration of emergency,” Chohan said.
