Ahmadinejad’s speech at Columbia university “Positive” – Government Spokesman

Tehran : Iranian government spokesman Gholam-Hossein Elham has described as “positive and successful” last week’s speech by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at Columbia University in New York.

President Ahmadinejad addressed the Columbia University, on Sept 24, during his stay in New York to attend the United Nations 62nd General Assembly session.

Speaking to IRNA Monday, Elham said by delivering the controversial speech at the Columbia University, the president “created a new room for making direct contacts with the US and international public opinions.”

“The president’s visit to the US was a good chance to cast light on the realities about Iran’s Islamic system,” Elham said.

He added that the insulting behaviour toward President Ahmadinejad by the university’s president, Lee Bollinger, “unveiled the true nature of Washington’s claims about existence of democracy and freedom of speech in the US.”

The speech has also given the world public opinion as well as those of the American people and the university students an opportunity to make a proper judgment about the situation of democracy and freedom of expression in the US, Elham stressed.
