New Delhi : Panchkula and Mohali, the two satellite towns on the periphery of Chandigarh, have been included for infrastructural funding under the centrally sponsored Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCCEA), which met Monday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, included “three more towns or urban agglomeration in the JNNURM”, said a statement issued after the meeting.

Panchkula is in Haryana, bordering Chandigarh, and Mohali, is an extension of Chandigarh in Punjab. “These towns are entirely in continuum to Chandigarh, a spill over of the growth of Chandigarh,” the cabinet note stated.

Similarly Naya Raipur, in the vicinity of Raipur, the state capital of Chhattisgarh, is also being included to provide for “cohesive development of Naya Raipur, along with existing city of Raipur”. At present, the total area of Naya Raipur comprises 41 villages.

JNNURM was launched by the government in December 2005 to implement reforms-driven planned development of identified cities, focussing on efficiency in urban infrastructure, service delivery mechanisms and basic services to the urban poor with community participation and accountability of urban local bodies, the statement added.
