Broken foot ends Morkel’s Pakistan tour

Karachi : South African fast bowler Morne Morkel will play no further part in the team’s tour of Pakistan after fracturing his foot.

The promising 22-year-old suffered the injury when he stepped on a pebble during a three-day tour match last week.

“Since this kind of injury takes six to eight weeks to heal, his tour is over,” a South African spokesman explained here Tuesday.

The selectors have yet to decide whether to send a replacement for the second Test starting Oct 8.

The South Africans will announce a separate squad for the five-match one-day international series that starts in Lahore Oct 18.

Officials said that Morkel would return to South Africa on the first available flight after X-rays confirmed the fracture of his left foot. Morkel had an impressive Twenty20 World Championships campaign, claiming nine wickets, including 4/17 against New Zealand in Durban.
