Jammu : New Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor Friday reviewed the security situation along the Indo-Pak border in Jammu and Kashmir with senior officers of the Northern Command and Corps Commanders.

Gen Kapoor, who took over as Army Chief four days ago, arrived along with his wife at Udhampur this morning on a two-day visit to the state.

He later reviewed the security situation, especially in border areas of the state, with senior officers at Northern Command and Corps Headquarter in Udhampur and Nagrota.

The General was briefed on various facets of the security setup in the three regions of the state, defence sources said. The Army Chief appreciated the synergy achieved in ongoing counter-terrorist operations as also the excellent anti- infiltration operations being undertaken, they said.

Gen Kapoor’s wife Kirit Kapoor visited the army nursery school at Nagrota.

The Army Chief later flew in to Sanjachat helipad and undertook a journey on foot to the holy cave shrine of Mata Vaishnodevi where he performed the ‘darshan’ of the deity.

Tomorrow, Gen Kapoor would visit Srinagar, where he is likely to have meetings with state police officials and other members of unified headquarters in which emphasis would be laid on a concerted effort in counter-insurgency operations, the sources said.

Gen Kapoor, who had served in Jammu and Kashmir as a Brigade Commander 1998 and also headed the prestigious Northern Command, has ruled out troops reduction in the state.

There cannot be any curtailment of army’s role in combating terror keeping in view the geo-political situation vis-a-vis the threat from terrorists, he had said.
