23 members of Jamaat-e-Islami, a coalition partner of the 6-party alliance Mutahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) or United Action Forum, handed over resignations to the Speaker provincial assemblies in Peshawar, Siraj-ul-Haq, Jamaat provincial chief said.

Siraj-ul-Haq said that the resignations are aimed at blocking General Musharraf’s re-election bid.

The major alliance group Jamiat ulema-e-Islam (JUI) has not yet decided to quit the assembly.

The NWFP opposition has moved no-confidence motion against the Chief Minister and JUI says it will face the motion instead resigning the assembly.

Besides Jmaat-e-Islami, 12 members of two other opposition groups in NWFP assembly also resigned and handed over resignations to the Speaker Bakht Jehan Khan.

Resignations in NWFP came one day before the presidential elections.

Members belonging to the opposition alliance the All
Parties Democratic Movement have already quit the National and provincial assemblies to protest General Musharraf’s re-elections.

General Musharraf said in a TV interview on Wednesday that resignations would not affect presidential elections, due on October 6.

Former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto said yesterday that her party members will not resigns as she was optimistic about a power-sharing formula with President Musharraf.
