Orissa lifts ban on employment against vacancies

By IANS

Bhubaneswar : Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has lifted a ban imposed eight years ago on employing people against vacancies in government departments, official sources said Wednesday.

The government was not filling up vacancies arising from retirements, citing bad financial health of the state. It was also not making any new recruitment.

“The state government will immediately start the process of recruitment against vacant base-level posts and more than 36,000 people will be appointed soon across the state’s 15 departments,” a release issued by Patnaik’s office said.

It will help the departments to functions more efficiently, the release said.

A senior leader of the state’s main opposition Congress party described the announcement as political. There is possibility of a mid-term poll at the centre and Patnaik wants state assembly elections at the same time.

“The move is to allure millions of unemployed youths who have been leading a life in isolation due to lack of jobs and decided to campaign against Patnaik’s government,” former state Congress president Sarat Patnaik told IANS.
