A personal message was conveyed by the Indian high commissioner to Pakistan, Satyabrata Pal, to Benazir Bhutto stating that the Indian government was “horrified by the loss of innocent life” and the injuries sustained by senior members of her Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

“We are relieved that you yourself are unhurt,” the Indian envoy added.

Stating that terrorism was a “common challenge” for all South Asians, he added, “We look forward to working with you to defeat terrorism in all its forms”.

Earlier Friday, external affairs ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna said here: “We strongly condemn the terrorist attack in Karachi.”

He said it was “reprehensible that senior political figures are targeted in this way with such loss of innocent life”.

Calling for a united front against terrorists, Sarna noted that the “spectre of terrorism confronting our region requires strong and determined action by all our governments”.

India and Pakistan will hold the second meeting of their joint anti-terror mechanism in New Delhi Monday.
