UN launches new AIDS project in Nepal

By NNN-PTI

New York : To boost HIV and AIDS services among the conflict-affected population in Nepal, the United Nations refugee agency has launched a new project in the country.

The initiative was born from a review which pressed for the need of better coverage of HIV prevention activities in high-risk population, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said.

“It is a result of a joint UN assessment undertaken in November 2006 in Banke, Ilam and Kathmandu. I am confident that UN along with its NGO partners can better respond to the protection and prevention of HIV/AIDS here,” Abraham Abraham, UNHCR Representative in Nepal said.

The NGOs involved in the project include — the General Welfare Pratisthan, Knight Chess Club, and Maiti Nepal. The project is supported by the Department for International Development and channelled through the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).

HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness activities have always been an integral part of UNHCR’s programme in the refugee camps in Jhapa and Morang districts in Nepal, he said.
