UPA, Left to meet again over nuclear deal

New Delhi : India’s ruling coalition and its communist allies met Monday to discuss their differences over the Indo-US nuclear deal and decided to meet again Nov 16.

A statement issued at the end of the meeting said the discussions took place in a “constructive and cordial atmosphere”.

Leaders of the Congress and its allies in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and of the four Left parties backing the government discussed the implications of the Hyde Act on India’s nuclear policy and the country’s pursuit of an independent foreign policy.

It had been earlier feared that Monday’s meeting would turn out to be the last in view of the communist demand that the government spell out its final stand on the nuclear deal, which the Left feels hurts Indian interests.
