No subway near India Gate: government tells court

New Delhi : The government Thursday submitted before the Delhi High Court that it was not advisable to construct a subway near the historic India Gate in the capital, as it could pose a security threat to the Lutyen’s Zone.

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) in an application said a subway could be a security threat as the Republic Day parade was conducted at the India Gate and offices and residences of many VIPs were in the vicinity.

Filing an application before the bench headed by Justice Mukul Mudgal, the municipal body said many high-tension wires and sewerage were lying near the India Gate and without modern technology it would not be possible to construct a subway near it.

The Delhi government informed the court that it had initiated steps to rein in the privately operated Blueline buses that had killed about 100 people on the capital’s roads this year so far.
