Colombo : At least 10 Tamil Tiger rebels were killed and several others injured in pre-emptive strikes carried out by Sri Lankan security forces today at the LTTE dominated Wanni in the island nation’s embattled north.
Security forces continuing their pre-emptive strikes ahead of the Wanni Forward Defence Lines in the north of Uyilankulam in the area destroyed three LTTE bunkers killing four militants while seriously injuring 10 others, in clashes early this morning, the defence ministry said.
No injuries were caused to security forces, it said.
Meanwhile, ground forces, in retaliation to an LTTE offencive, advanced at general area of Parappakandal in north- western Mannar damaged two LTTE heavy guns thereby dismantling the militants attempts to regroup, the ministry said.
“Precision strikes were carried-out at LTTE artillery launching pads based on technical information from ground troops,” the defence ministry quoted the sources as saying.
Separately, in a location North West of Giant’s Tank in Mannar, troops clashed with an LTTE group killing six of them, it said, adding the rebel casualties were not confirmed.
No damages were caused to the troops, the ministry said.
Meanwhile, LTTE militants in an abortive attempt to target an army jeep last night detonated a claymore mine in the Jaffna town, it said.
The bomb targeting the army vehicle transporting fresh ration to troops was exploded at Punjankulama, it said, adding soldiers suffered no casualties in this incident as the bomb missed its target.
Troops in a subsequent search in the area have found one hand grenade, an electric battery and a 25 m long wire roll.
