New York : Scientists in the US have found that some of the drugs commonly used to treat blood pressure may also help prevent mental disorder like Alzheimer’s.
Scientists at the Mount Sinai Medical Center here carried out a study on mice, which were genetically modified to develop Alzheimer’s. They found that the mice benefited significantly when given Valsartan, a drug used to treat high blood pressure.
Other blood pressure drugs also had similar effect, health portal Medical News Today reported.
The researchers believe their study can be useful in developing new methods of treating Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive deterioration in general. The researchers, however, said further studies are needed on humans.
