New Delhi : The US Wednesday said children should not be “doing bonded labour” as 14 child labourers have been freed from Delhi’s embroidery units supplying garments to international labels.
Careful not to tread on India’s toes, US embassy spokesperson Elizabeth Fitzsimmons said, “The US supports India’s efforts to end abusive child labour and prosecute those who prey on children.”
She added, “Children should be at school, not doing bonded labour”.
As many as 42 child labourers were rescued from various embroidery units in Shahpur Jat locality in south Delhi in raids conducted by police along with NGOs on Monday and Tuesday.
Some of the units manufacture garments as sub-contractors for multinational firms.
