WASHINGTON, Oct 30 (APP): The United States said Monday Pakistan is undergoing a political transition and noted a number of positive developments regarding moderate forces within the political system working together toward building a moderate country.
The State Department spokesman rejected characterizations of a civil war like situation in the country, as suggested by a journalist in view of bombing incidents and political situation and added the US sees a lot of positive developments with regard to joint efforts in the political system towards a moderate Pakistan.
Spokesman Sean McCormack also expressed satisfaction with the US-Pakistan cooperation in fighting terrorism by observing that “we’re working quite well with the Pakistani government on how to address those threats” which pose a threat to both allies and others. “I don’t think I would describe the situation in Pakistan quite as you did,” spokesman Sean McCormack stated while disagreeing with negative projections about Pakistan’s internal environment. He reaffirmed at the daily briefing that Washington encourages efforts for progress towards a moderate country but is not in the business of picking candidates or political parties as it the Pakistani people who will decide about the South Asian ally’s leadership.
“Pakistan is undergoing a political transition. There are a number of positive developments in terms of moderate forces within the Pakistani political system working together for a moderate Pakistan. That is something that we have encouraged. ‘That said, we don’t pick candidates or political parties. Ultimately who leads Pakistan is going to have to be a decision for the Pakistani people,” spokesman Sean McCormack remarked at the regular briefing.
Commenting on another point, the spokesman observed Pakistan faces a threat from violent extremists operating on its own territory. The US, he stated, is working with the Pakistani government in the fight against violent extremism. McCormack said the US also supports Pakistan’s efforts to move towards greater political and economic reform.
