Srinagar : Fourteen people – nine civilians and five troopers – were wounded when separatists detonated a powerful car bomb explosion in Srinagar Saturday evening.

A senior police officer told IANS that separatist guerrillas carried out a powerful car bomb explosion in the Hyderpora by-pass area of the Jammu and Kashmir summer capital, five kilometres from city centre Lal Chowk, injuring 14 people.

“The militants detonated an explosive-laden Maruti car parked in the Hyderpora by-pass area when a BSF (Border Security Force) vehicle was passing through.

“Fourteen persons including nine civilians and five BSF troopers were wounded in this explosion. All the injured have been evacuated to the hospital,” the officer said.

Police said the guerrillas had parked the explosive-laden car on the roadside and detonated it by remote control.

The area was immediately cordoned off and senior police and paramilitary officers reached the spot.

Traffic on the busy Hyderpora by-pass, which leads to the Indira Gandhi airport road, was suspended for a while. Searches were being carried out in the area, but no arrests were reported till late in the evening.
