Two budding painters win emerging artist award

New Delhi : Upcoming artists Om Soorya and Rakhi Peswani have won the 2007 emerging artist award given by the Foundation for Indian Contemporary Art (FICA).

While Soorya, from Hyderabad, stood out for his strong personal style and technical skill, Peswani, based in Pune, was selected for the conceptual strength in her work and her innovative language with material, a FICA press statement said.

A six-member jury of Atul Dodiya, Shilpa Gupta, Subodh Gupta, N.S. Harsha and critics Anshuman Dasgupta and Annapurna Garimella made the selection from 450 entries.

Soorya and Peswani will be awarded a two-month residency in New Delhi beside a cash award of Rs.100,000 and an exhibition at the Vadehra Art Gallery in the national capital.

FICA is a non-profit organisation based in New Delhi, which supports artists and educational activities in visual arts.
