Another student succumbs to Kathmandu blasts

Kathmandu : After fighting for her life two days, a 12th grade school student has succumbed to injuries sustained during the serial blasts in Kathmandu three days ago, taking the toll to three.

Sandhya Khadka, a student of Vishwa Niketan Higher Secondary School in Tripureshwor area, was the second teen from the school to die in the blasts that shook the capital, being the first urban attack since the Maoist guerrillas signed a peace pact with the government last year.

The condition of a soldier from the Nepal Army, Chatur Bahadur Nepali, who is being treated at the army hospital, was also reported to be critical.

Another victim, Sita Acharya, lost her right leg in the blasts.

Though Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula had said the police investigation report would be made public Tuesday, the government remained silent.

While four obscure groups have claimed responsibility for the three near-simultaneous explosions that went off in the capital Sunday, the claims have met with scepticism.

The Maoists are alleging that the attacks have been engineered by supporters of beleaguered King Gyanendra and the political parties have called them an attempt to sabotage the election in November that will decide the king’s fate.

Two bombs went off at bus stands in crowded areas of the capital while the third occurred in a mini bus.

Sandhya and other students of her school where waiting at the Tripureshwor bus stand when the explosion occurred, killing another 12th grader, Anisha K.C.

The third woman killed in the blast, 65-year-old Kamla Devi, was in the mini bus.

Though the police began raiding hotels and guesthouses and searching vehicles going out of Kathmandu in search of the culprits, no breakthrough has been officially reported.

Searches have also begun in Nepal’s towns bordering India since three of the groups that claimed responsibility described themselves as being from the Terai plains.
