Johannesburg : Cricket South Africa (CSA) has announced that all-rounder Jacques Kallis was standing firm on his decision to relinquish the vice-captain’s post but at the same time remained totally committed to South African cricket.
“When Jacques accepted the vice-captaincy two years ago at the start of Mickey Arthur’s term as national coach,” said CSA chief executive Gerald Majola in a statement, “it was always on the basis that he would see how he enjoyed the extra responsibility of the position and that he would review it after a suitable period.
“Jacques has now decided that he wants to concentrate on his game. Our discussions were entirely cordial and constructive and it is only right that we accept his decision.
“We will now start the process of appointing a replacement vice-captain in consultation with the selectors, the national coach and captain.”
In a joint statement, Kallis said he remained totally committed to South African cricket.
“I will always be willing to help others,” he said in reference to his role as senior batsman in the squad that includes mentoring younger players such as A.B. de Villiers, Hashim Amla and J.P. Duminy.
“I just want to become the best player that I can possibly be.”
