Kolkata : Global PC manufacturing major Lenovo will hold nominations to select an Indian sportsperson to represent the company as a torchbearer when the international portion of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay travels through Mumbai in April next year.

“We are delighted that Mumbai has been selected as a stop on the international portion of the Olympic Torch Relay route. The company is pleased to welcome the Lenovo-designed torch and to honour new thinkers who build bridges across culture and communities by participating in the Olympic Torch Relay,” Lenovo’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer Deepak Advani said.

Lenovo has invited Indian citizens above the age of 18 to submit nominations for becoming a Lenovo Torchbearer by choosing a sports personality from a list of 10.

The list will be selected by an eminent panel of judges. The public will also be asked to submit a 100-word essay on the nomination form, outlining how the sportsperson of their choice embodies the Olympic spirit.

Lenovo will run online and offline promotions to drive Indian citizens to cast their nominations for the Lenovo Torchbearer. The winner will be announced in early 2008 after approvals from the Beijing Organising Committee.

“Lenovo is not only the exclusive provider of computing equipment for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, but also a proud sponsor of the Olympic Torch Relay and designer of the torch itself,” Lenovo chairperson Yang Yuanqing said.

The official torch lighting of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games will take place in Olympia, Greece, in March 2008. The torch is scheduled to travel to 22 cities in five continents, including major cities like London, Paris, San Francisco, Canberra, Mumbai, before spending 97 days in mainland China to arrive at its final destination in Beijing during August next year.
