Abducted Patna boy untraced even after a month

Patna : A 12-year-old schoolboy, kidnapped from Patna a month ago, is yet to be traced.

Akash Pandey was kidnapped while on way to his school Aug 10. Despite repeated assurances by the police, there is no information about the Class 8 student of the DAV School here.

Akash’s mother, Anju, has lost faith in the police and feels that only a miracle can ensure her son’s safe return.

“How many times will the police give me just token promises? I am fed up with their false assurances,” Anju told IANS Monday.

“We have been praying to God for the safe return of our child,” Anju said with tears rolling down her cheeks. The family has turned a room in their house into a temple since last week to pray for Akash’s safety.

Neighbours say that a distraught Anju has not eaten properly since the kidnapping and has been surviving on tea and water.

Akash’s father, Yogendra, a government official said, “I don’t understand what to do and whom to approach. I fail to understand why the police have failed to trace Akash.”

Students of various schools took out a procession, organised special prayers and observed a token fast last month to put pressure on the state administration to trace Akash.

Kidnapping has become a thriving industry in Bihar with nearly 5,000 people, including hundreds of children, abducted across the state in the past year. A staggering 2,217 people were kidnapped in the first six months this year.

Figures received by the Patna high Court indicate that 1,800 cases of kidnapping were registered in 2006.

However, M.P. Gupta, a senior lawyer of Patna High Court, has a much higher figure, saying 4,849 cases of kidnapping were registered from July 2006 to June 2007.
