Felix kills 65, injures 21 in Nicaragua

Managua : Nicaraguan government Monday said Hurricane Felix on its passage across the country had killed 65 people and injured 21.

In a revised statement, Civil Defence Agency said Puerto Cabezas, the capital of the Autonomous North Atlantic Region, with 60 dead, bore the brunt of the calamity, Spanish news agency EFE reported Monday.

The hurricane, which hit Nicaragua last Tuesday packing winds at a speed of 260 km an hour, was measured as a top-level Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale and caused extensive property and environmental damage, according to reports. More than 90,000 people were affected by the hurricane.

The hurricane destroyed 12,003 homes and partially damaged 3,985, as well as damaging 88 public buildings and 107 private buildings, Civil Defence Agency said.

The agency said that some six million litres of water were needed for drinking and cooking over the next 15 days in the areas affected by Felix, and people in the affected area needed immediate supplies of essential items, including medical assistance.
