Bangalore : At least 10 people, including four girls, were killed and 20 injured Saturday when a Karnataka State Road Transport bus fell into a roadside well in Belguam district.
“The well is a huge one and more than 20 feet deep and the bus fell into it around 1300 hours,” Belguam District Superintendent of Police Hemant Nimbalkar told IANS over phone from the accident spot, 10 km from Athani.
Athani is about 600 km from this state capital.
A spokesperson of the State Road Transport Corporation said here that the bus fell into the roadside well after it hit a kerb stone by the road and the driver lost control of the bus while trying to avoid running into an oncoming two-wheeler.
The bus driver was among the injured, Nimbalkar said.
The girls killed in the accident were aged between 12 and 18 years, he said.
The 20 injured, including eight women, were being treated at the Athani hospital, local police said.
