Shimla, Sep 18 (IANS) The state run Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board (HPSEB) has generated a record 640 million units of power during the last one year and sold most of this to neighbouring states, officials said Tuesday.
Officials of the firm attribute it to good water discharge in the several Himalayan rivers that flow through the hill state and run 14 HPSEB hydel projects.
“The HPSEB has done good business this year, particularly during July to September when the demand for power from neighbouring states is the highest in the year,” said Kanwar Shamsher Singh, chairman of HPSEB.
Also, electricity costs were raised to Rs.7 this year from around Rs.5 last year, fetching higher returns to the board.
Last year the board was able to generate 550 million units of power during the same period.
The HPSEB sold around 250 million units to Punjab, 200 million units to Delhi, and the remaining to private companies and to Himachal Pradesh.
The generation of 90 million units more of electricity this year has fetched the board around Rs.700 million, said officials.
