Aligarh: The enquiry committee that was instituted to investigate the alleged incident of rape in Abdullah Hall on 11 September 2007, has submitted its interim report today in the meeting of the Executive Council, Aligarh Muslim University. In its report, the Committee has submitted that no such incident occurred in the girls hostel, and the allegation was no more than a baseless rumor. The report alleged that “rumors were motivated from a deep-rooted conspiracy to de-stabilize the University.”
A special meeting of the AMU Executive Council was convened on Friday to take stock of the campus situation. Meeting attended by 24 members lasted for more than five hours, according to a statement released by the University.
The Vice-Chancellor was authorized to expedite the process for the institution of a CBI enquiry to investigate the murder of Mr. Mazhar Naim, and the arson and pillage that followed it. The Executive Council has also decided to give job to Mazhar’s brother in the University. The Executive Council also felt that, in view of the prevailing tense situation, the Vice-Chancellor should be provided Z-level security cover, and the University should hire CISF personnel, to improve the security arrangements in the campus. It also approved the appointment of a Chief Security Advisor of the rank of an IPS officer in the University.
The Executive Council also felt that the security arrangements should be modernized, and at sensitive positions, CCTV and other technologies of surveillance should be deployed. It also authorized the Vice-Chancellor to call the police and para-military forces whenever the security of the University was under threat. The Council authorized the Vice-Chancellor to select a retired judge of the Supreme Court to investigate all the incidents of arson and murders that have occurred in the campus from June 2006 to September 2007.
The Students Union which has already completed its tenure was dissolved. It was also decided that the dates for fresh elections would soon be announced, but the forthcoming elections would be held on the basis of the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations.
The Council was of the view that the University should provide financial compensation to the Vice-Chancellor for the losses he has incurred in the loot and plunder of his residence, by the miscreants and agitated students. The Vice-Chancellor rejected the offer, and refused to accept any compensation.
