Baghdad : Unknown gunmen shot dead an Iraqi journalist working for an Iraqi satellite channel in a neighborhood in southwestern Baghdad on Sunday, an independent Iraqi media watchdog said Monday.

“Jawad Sa’doun al-Da’mi, a journalist working the al-Baghdadiyah satellite channel, was shot dead by an unidentified armed men in the al-Qadisiyah neighborhood in western the capital,” the Journalistic Freedom Observatory (JFO) said in a statement.

The 40-year-old victim was the third journalist killed in September in Iraq after two Iraqi journalists were gunned down in the city of Mosul, some 400 km north of Baghdad.

Earlier in the month, gunmen shot dead Amir Malallah al-Rashidi, a sports journalist working for the Mosuliyah local television in Mosu, and Muhannad Ghanim al-Ubeidi, a journalist working for the Dar al-Salam Radio in the city.

Some 236 Iraqi newsmen have been killed in Iraq, including 26 in Mosul alone, since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, according to the count by Baghdad-based Iraqi Journalists’ Union.

The Paris-based media watchdog, Reporters without Borders, has described the dangers that face journalists in Iraq since the outbreak of the Iraq war as the highest for the media since World War II.
