Nepal’s Seven-party meet ends inconclusively

By IRNA

New Delhi : The meeting of the top leaders of the seven parties, held at Nepal’s Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar to end the prevailing political stalemate stemming from the differences between the major parties over the electoral system for the Constituent Assembly (CA) elections, ended inconclusively late Saturday.

The leaders could not arrive at a consensus as Maoist leaders did not give up their demand to switch to a fully proportional system, media reports said here.

Owing to disagreement, the parties might skip the election commission’s schedule to file the nominations tomorrow.

As per Election Commission’s schedule the parties had to submit a closed list of their nominees for the polls.

However, CPN-UML has said that it would not file nominations tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the Maoists have said that they would disrupt tomorrow’s nomination filings by surrounding the EC office.

As per the election schedule, the parties must submit their closed- list of 240 candidates for the elections under the mixed electoral system.

Quitting the government earlier this month, the Maoists had vowed to disrupt the November 22 elections if the other parties do not agree on their 22-point pre-requisites for the CA polls, including a fully proportional electoral system.

Only Saturday afternoon, speaking at a function in the capital Kathmandu, Maoist Whip Janardan Sharma ‘Prabhakar’ said that the Maoists “won’t submit the closed list of the candidates and won’t let the other parties do so”.
