Bucharest : Unites States President George W. Bush arrived in Bucharest on Tuesday afternoon, for an official visit in Romania and to attend the NATO summit held in the eastern European country.
The NATO summit is to take place in Bucharest on April 2-4, with the enlargement, operations in Afghanistan and Kosovo as its main topics.
Bush will be in Bucharest on Wednesday morning, then will travel to Constanta, on Romania’s Black Sea coast, to meet with Romanian President Traian Basescu. The U.S. president will return to Bucharest on the same day, to meet with NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, before taking part in the working dinner of the NATO leaders.
Bush will then participate in a Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council, so-called EAPC. That will be a working lunch. The EAPC includes all 26 NATO allies plus 23 NATO partner countries from Europe and Central Asia.
After the lunch, Bush will participate in a meeting on Afghanistan. At this meeting, NATO leaders will be joined by Afghan President Karzai, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, and other partners in Afghanistan, including the European Union, the World Bank, and all nations contributing troops to the International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF.
On Friday, Bush will participate in a summit meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Commission, followed by a summit meeting of the NATO-Russia Council. He will also meet with the Romanian Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu.
The U.S. president will then depart for Zagreb to meet with the President of Croatia Stipe Mesic.
