Jakarta : The route for the Olympic torch relay in Jakarta, scheduled for April 22, is still being kept secret due to security reasons, according to Indonesia’s national Olympic commission (KONI).
Even though the route had been announced previously, the Beijing 2008 Olympics organising committee decided to cancel the route and had not revealed the new one, it said.
KONI public relations officer, Firmansyah Gindo, was quoted by the Antara news agency as saying that the decision was made by the committee, in collaboration with the Chinese embassy here.
The Beijing Olympics organising committee and the Chinese embassy had the full power to determine the route, he said.
“It’s being kept secret because of the threat of demonstrations against the Chinese government in connection with the Tibet problems. It seems the committee is very concerned about security,” he said.
The committee had earlier announced that the torch run would be held around Senayan.
