Islamabad : Pakistan on Wednesday termed as baseless a statement from an Afghan cabinet Minister that Pakistan had dumped nuclear waste in southern Afghanistan during Taliban period.
Afghanistan Parliamentary Affairs Minister Farooq Wardag has been quoted as saying that Pakistan had buried nuclear waste in Kandahar and Helmand when Taliban were ruling the areas.
“Afghan minister statement regarding dumping of nuclear waste by Pakistan in Afghanistan was baseless,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Muhammad Sadiq said.
He said disposal of nuclear waste is strictly regulated in accordance with the international standards.
“Our nuclear power stations are under IAEA safeguards which not only keeps an oversight on their operations but also on storage of nuclear waste which has to be fully accounted for”.
Blasphemous cartoons: He said Pakistan condemns the blasphemous acts of reproduction of blasphemous caricature by Danish newspaper and the anti-Quran movie released on the Internet by a Dutch legislator.
“Pakistan has made demarches with important Western capitals including Brussels and Vatican”.
In response to a question regarding demands for expelling the Danish Ambassador from Pakistan, the Spokesman said that currently there is no Danish ambassador in Islamabad. Denmark’s last ambassador had returned to Copenhagen over one and a half year ago, he said.
Olympics: Sadiq told a questioner that politicization of the Olympic Games is condemnable and Pakistan would be participating in Beijing Olympics.
He said that the Olympic torch would be coming to Pakistan on April 16th.
