Five killed in Afghan blast, Taliban commander slain

By KUNA

Kabul : Three Afghan policemen and two civilians were killed in a suicide blast in southern Afghanistan Friday morning.

The bomber blew himself up close to a police vehicle in Lashkargah, capital of Afghanistan’s volatile Helmand province.

Police chief of the province Muhammad Hussein Andiwal said the attack was carried out in the morning, adding that one policeman and two more civilians sustained injuries in the blast.

Meanwhile, Afghan officials claimed they had killed a dreaded Taliban commander during a clash with security forces in northern Afghanistan.

Muhammad Ayub Salangi, police chief of Kunduz province, disclosed to journalists that the commander was named as Mullah Janan.

If proven correct, the killing of Mullah Janan will be another serious blow to the warring Taliban militants after the arrest of Mullah Naqeeb in southern Afghanistan.

Earlier in the day, NATO officials announced the death of an Afghan fuel tanker driver in a roadside bomb blast in Kunar province of eastern Afghanistan.

A NATO statement said the vehicle was in an ISAF convoy and the driver was a civilian.

The statement blamed Taliban militants for planting the bomb.
