French Govt. Faces No-Confidence Vote

By Prensa Latina

Paris : Nine months after assuming power, French President Nicolas Sarkozy got a first vote of no confidence against his conservative government due to the sending of reinforcements to Afghanistan and the return to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Deputies from the Socialist, Communist and Green parties presented the text before the Chamber of Deputies of France, strongly rejecting the sending of another 800 soldiers to Afghanistan.

It also repudiates Sarkozy’s attitude, as he announced in Bucarest the return of his country to NATO’s military structure.

We want the French people know the dangerous breach that the president and his government are causing to the national consensus which might prevail regarding the principles of military and strategic independence of France, the motion said.

The document also refers to reforms implemented by Sarkozy, the popular discontent because of the fall in purchasing power of the population and the alleged austerity plan of the current administration.

The no-confidence vote, supported by 226 signatures, is expected to be discussed on Tuesday. However, it has no chance to succeed because the governing Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) boasts absolute majority in the National Assembly.
